At the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games in Torino Italy, a young woman from Sweden arrived with her team, sharing high hopes of competing for a medal in the sport of sledge hockey (known in the USA as sled hockey). Unfortunately, she was informed that she would not be able to play as it was considered a men’s only sport. She was devastated. Out of that adversity, a new movement in sledge hockey was born to expand the participation of women in the sport on an international level. So began the USA Women’s Sled Hockey Team. This team operates strictly on donations, which are tax deductible under the umbrella of Sled Hockey America, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Sled hockey is a version of ice hockey played by individuals who have various disabilities affecting their lower body. The players sit on a specially designed sled with skate blades below and propel themselves with two short hockey sticks with picks. It is full check, exciting ice hockey following most of the same rules as stand up ice hockey.
Disabled athletes incur many extra expenses in their daily lives for both medical care and specialized equipment. Players on our Women’s Sled Hockey Team live throughout the United States and must travel long distances for training and competitions. This has previously been a financial burden, often keeping skilled players from being a part of the team. Sponsorships are now starting to assist us in bringing these players together and in turn we are developing into a much stronger team.
This is where we need your help. Your sponsorship will help us to run more training camps throughout the country to find and develop the best players. These players will then be able to travel to both national and international competitions to prepare them to represent our country when they one day may become one of the first ever women’s Paralympic sledge hockey teams.
The goal is for Women’s Sledge Hockey to be a demonstration sport in the 2022 Paralympics. We cannot do this without your help. We need generous individuals and companies like you to help us make these dreams come true for these great female athletes.
Please consider making a donation, no matter how big or small. Be sure to visit our website at www.uswomensledgehockey.org, to view our levels of sponsorship.
